As we look forward to fully recover from COVID 19; thanks to the advances in science, technology, and innovation (STI), we also worry about the injustice STI brings to the table. Technology has surely enhanced human performance to an unprecedented level yet intensified inequality among individuals and nations. The pandemic exposed such paradoxes in the uneven distribution of vaccine and medication, for one. In fact, the year 2021, witnessed three STI paradigm shifts in the human history, introducing boundless opportunities as well as fears for the future beyond Covid 19; 1) the STI-triggered emergence of a self-replicating xenobot [1], 2) the ‘Human Augmentation’ thinkpiece [2] published by the UK Defence and Military, accepting that technology is a form of evolutionary Selection resulting in an ‘augmented’ existence of the human kind comprising physical, biological as well as socioeconomic dimensions [3][4][5]; 3) and finally, the issuance of the first 1-12 AI curriculum by the UNESCO [6], marking a significant adjustment of the educational system to accommodate our relationship to machines. Despite the improved overall capacity [7], our interaction with technology is generally mediated by a global economic system deeply rooted in Neoliberalism: cut-throat competition and inequality among people, genders, age-groups, and nations. Responses [8] include, but not limited to, a) Transformative education and interdisciplinary research, assessing the environmental and socioeconomic implications of the ever-evolving human-machine symbiosis; b) Media literacy (and indeed democracy). c) Incentivising STIs solutions that boost synergies among people, species, genders, and nations and empowering indigenous women, in harmony with the dynamics of nature. d) Weighing opportunities against risks as we evaluate nature-based solutions against massive-scale industrialisation and reliance on automation. Without systemic change and active involvement of all stakeholders, structural inequalities and human rights violations will continue to shape our post-pandemic world.

Janet Frame: International Women's Day Story Time!

Janet Frame 1924 – 2004

Escaped a scheduled lobotomy when, just days before the procedure, her short stories collection debut was unexpectedly awarded a national literary prize. Lobotomy was a cruel mind-altering procedure performed mostly (84%) on women who were expected to be docile and submissive, but instead, were (annoyingly) anxious and ambitious. The procedure was often performed without requiring the consent of the 'patient' and sometimes without their knowledge.

Between lobotomy and witch hunts that allowed murdering 'suspected' women with no repercussions, intelligent women were often penalised (and conditioned into) passiveness and imposed incompetence. Today many women around the world are still facing modern forms of lobotomy and witch hunts as well, in addition to the well-established gender bias in the field of science and technology, leadership and land ownership.

Another form of 'taming' women into docility and submission is Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Female is the forced removal of external (young) female genitalia with the aim of curbing their sexual drive so that they are better and 'calmer' future wives. Despite the global condemnation of the practice, more than 200 million girls and women alive today have been cut as such. FGM is mostly carried out on girls between infancy and age 15.

The long-term consequences of such historic and ongoing conditioning of women are devastating for women, communities, and the planet. Gender inequality has resulted in an economic system based in extraction and exploitation while a body of evidence shows that expanding opportunities for women and girls reduced poverty and enhanced ecosystems (ILO 2016; UNDP 2016a; UN Women 2014; World Bank 2011)

Dear women, you are wonderful, you are capable, you can do it! Keep fighting for your rights and those of your sisters in humanity for a better future.

Here the story ends, or does it?
Happy International Women's Day!

The magic of a "frozen heart"! - an educational perspective

I'm writing today about the influential/educational messages in "Frozen"; the Disney animation which has captivated the hearts of little girls all around the world. Those who became infatuated by the magical powers of ice-manipulation; the "..beautiful, powerful, dangerous and cold"!

The story is of two little princesses born to the noble king and queen of Arendelle. The elder princess Elsa is born with the amazing power of manipulating ice. Elsa doesn't know how to control such power and finds herself hurting her sister, so she gets instructed by her parents and the forest "trolls" to conceal those powers, forget about them, and somehow, to stay away from Anna, who has magically been made to forget those powers, while holding on to the good memories of playing in ice and building a "snowman" with Elsa! As Elsa tries to conceal the powers, she locks her sister out in agony. They both suffer the loneliness for years, especially when the mom and dad have died in the sea. Desperate for light, love, and attention, Anna breaks free on the day of coronation and falls foolishly for Prince Hans who turned out later to be a psychopath. The situation explodes in few hours after Elsa manages - with great difficulty, to keep her powers concealed, and she eventually sets her magic free to the astonishment of everyone, and mostly of her sister. Elsa runs away thinking she's saving the kingdom but Anna doesn't give up on her sister and goes out bravely to find her. Anna gets hurt again by her sister's powers and had to be saved by an "act of true love". The act of true love was not a unilateral kissing action of some male prince, as would traditionally be expected, but an interactive glowing flame of love between the two amazing sisters. Some suggested it's some sort of "self-salvation" (and it surely is in a sense) but limiting it to that is missing a point. The final embrace between Elsa and the frozen body of Anna is an illustration of what they've actually done for each other throughout the story. Hasn't Elsa sacrificed herself and happiness for Anna by the very act of alienation?

An unusual pattern of "true love" which saves the 'beautiful princess' from the curse of death by a frozen heart, and brings her back to life. The act of true love here is not like the one 'performed on' Snowhite or the Sleeping Beauty. It seems rather than a spiritual flame linking the two sisters all throughout the story even during the long period of estrangement imposed by Elsa's "fear" and Anna's unawareness of the reason of fear. The act of rejection itself was obviously an act of abundant love. It might seem that Anna was the one who sacrificed herself to save her sister Elsa at the end of the story, but hasn't Elsa endured the torture of having to shut beloved sister out for years and for what she thought would be forever, just to protect her and everybody else? This story, unlike all the traditional fairy tales, shows love as an act of mutual compassion and sacrifice, whether between the two sisters or between Anna and Kristoff!

Magical messages:

1- A woman is not her skin and hair

Kristoph did not seem 'struck' by the beauty of Anna at first sight, but his love to her grew as the drama of the story heightened. They were a good company for each other and took turns in saving each other! Could Anna have survived the frozen path to her Elsa on her own? The answer is probably not. Kristoph would't have made it on his own either if he wanted to. He was almost devoured by the hungry wolves if it wasn't for Anna's wit and bravery.

Moreover, when Elsa let go of her powers, she somehow transformed her looks as well. Her dress became more revealing and even her walking pattern changed into one resembling catwalks'. Her hair changed into a more liberated style. When Anna saw her later, she didn't say if she thought Elsa looked more beautiful or less beautiful this way. There was no judgment at all. To Ann, Elsa just looked "different".

In another instance, the rather realistic image of Anna, as she tries to wake up, is really remarkable - with her untidy hair and messy morning face; so distant from the typical "sleeping beauty" image. Every person can relate to Anna and be inspired by her because she seems real.

In most traditional love stories, it's the male who initiates the physical encounter (symbolised in the kiss), sometimes even when his lady is unconscious! It's been supposed that if "Mr Right" advances, then it's unquestionably lucky for the girl! But in this case, we hear Kristoph stating excitedly that he "can" kiss Anna, but then (realising the inconvenience of such a statement), he changes it to "may I", and then again - more remarkably, it finally ends up into "may we?".

A modern perspective of the traditional "kiss of true love" versus the one presented in "Frozen"

A fabulous adjustment of perspective to how women are generally regarded and appreciated.

3- One's own sexuality is no one else's business!

Is Elsa gay, asexual, queer, heterosexual, etc.? Well, if you try to answer this question, then you might have really missed the point. Elsa's sexuality - in my opinion, was not addressed in this fairy tale in any way: Any! She is a traumatised individual who has imposed a total isolation on herself so as to protect everyone she loved. She begins to behave normally only at the last seen of the story, and we cannot predict how will she approach or be approached by a lover - if any. It's just out of the film's scope. Elsa is presented as beautiful, powerful and complete; with or without a mate. Given the popularity of the message sent and received by this film, this is another form of inspiration and community healing.

4 - The "action" of true love

What exactly would be the "action of true love" that saved Anna? I didn't see one particular action but rather a dynamic ongoing relationship! The loving embrace between the two sisters has only crowned that relationship in its climax. But isn't this how "true love" really works?  Anna has done her part of the "embrace" already by sacrificing herself and standing between her sister Elsa and the evil Hans, then it was Elsa's turn to show the love she's always hidden. A love concealed for the sake of love. It was a dynamic two-ways true love, not a unilateral momentous gesture of affection.

5- The power of resilience

The moment Anna stands on her sister's ice door and hesitates to knock was breathtaking! A girl like her, wouldn't realistically knock the door, after years and years of rejection. Has she had a flash-back of all the long hours she spent as a child knocking on Elsa's door in vain? How could she overcome the trauma of such persistent rejection? What kind of self-healing produced that moment of bravery as she decided to go on and knock the ice door? How many of us fail in forming healthy, relationship because of the previous failures? The moment Anna overcomes her fear of rejection and knocks the door again as the circumstances changed, is a moment of fascinating resilience, emotional power, and intelligence. If I were a guardian - whether a parent or a teacher, I'd encourage my kids to watch this film and discuss it with them more than once.

This resilience heightens when Anna seeks whom (she thought) would be her savior; her hero, "the one"! Once and twice. In both occasions, she was not a "sleeping beauty"; she was not dead, sleeping or unconscious as she sought Hans' (or Kristoph's) "restorative" kiss. Anna moved towards her potential salvation with remarkable strength and resilience. She was certainly saddened, but not 'broken' by Hans' gruesome change-of-heart towards her. Hasn't she learnt, since childhood, to adapt to the vehement change of hearts! Her soul, then, keeps reaching out for the light relentlessly, and her mind stays as sharp as ever, so as to find other ways and to survive.

7- The power of true  love

Amazingly, though, when she had to make a decision on whether to keep advancing towards her personal salvation or her sister's, she chose Elsa's; the loving choice of  "laying down one's life for one's friends."John 15:3. It's important to note here that the true love in this story extends beyond sex and reproduction but does not, by any means, exclude them - as the love between Anna and Kristoph confirms.

To wrap up, the story of Anna and Elsa, is a story of true love, bravery and resilience. The dynamics of the relationships among the story characters make the true magic of the fairy tale. The magic in Anna's beyond-fear bravery and intelligence is rather more fascinating - for a 45 years old "little girl" as myself than the magic of manipulating ice.

Elsa's magic of creation and manipulation of ice, is not actually as magical as it may seem. Manipulation of ice, wood, steel or any matter is actually attainable through quality education and vocational training! Girls, and women in general, need to turn to more coding, engineering and science education to do that trick.

Finally, it is true that artworks don't have to be educational, but this Disney product has become unintentionally so, by communicating such powerful and reformative values on such a massive scale. Well done!

Should women dress modestly to avoid rape?

Perspective:

Wouldn't one be really tempted to answering: Yes?
But before attempting to answer the question, wouldn't it be a good idea to define the word modest in this context, first?
In other words; how modest is that "modest", which would protect women from masculine molestation?
* Would a pair of baggy trousers and a loose long top be modest enough?
- If the answer is yes, then how come that women in Sudan get flogged for wearing such kind of "indecent clothes"?

A pair of trousers and loose long top are not modest enough, then, in Sudan.
* Would a long loose skirt, under-trousers and a head scarf be modest?
- If the answer is yes, then how come women in Egypt get harassed, assaulted and hurt in the streets wearing such kind of clothes.
So a long loose skirt and a scarf may not be modest enough in Egypt. Walking without a head scarf is definitely "asking for it"!

* Would a black loose attire covering the woman from the head to toes, be modest enough then?

Not if eyes are attractive!!

Women with "attractive eyes" are required to cover their eyes as well - or get punished, in Saudi Arabia - how do you define sexy eyes?
So a black Would a black loose attire covering the woman from the head to toes might not be modest enough either.

So what is the answer?

The answer is that rape - as it seems, is not all about sex or desire. It is rather about masculine sadistic lust for domination. It is a culture that needs to be confronted and terminated rather than encouraged by imposing more censorship on women, leading - as observation and statistics* indicate, to more assault.

Once you start blaming women for sick men's assault, and dictating the kind of clothes they are required to wear, so as to avoid harassment and rape, the list of restrictions does not come to an end.

~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~

* Statistics indicating the intensity of violence against women in oppressive communities are likely to mirror much less of the reality. If the statistics indicate that one out of three women, for example, report having been sexually assaulted in a "morally conservative" community, the women surveyed would probably exclude spouse/husband assault. Spouse/husband rape and domestic violence are regarded - in most of the Middle East, as a masculine "right", and is too normalised to be noticed. In Egypt, it is legal for a man to beat his wife (and children), and a woman who doesn't give her husband "his rights" (by submitting to his sexual demands), is condemned by the community, and is said to be cursed by angels as well.

The assault reported, is also unlikely to include the offensive child marriage or catcalling, or the ultra-feminist sort of assault reported in the West, such as getting a compliment on the social media or cyber trolling. These are considered too normal and too frequent to be noticed.

If reported, surveys tend to disregard the frequency of catcalling and the intensity of the street assault, which might force women to withdrawal and isolation.

Statistics and the relativity of data-analysis can be very tricky when it comes to violence against women.

Time Feminism evolved!

If feminism stands for gender equality, then I'm a radical feminist.

However, I'm not happy with the name of the movement(s). I, as a "gender-equalist", like to be categorised as a gender-equality activist rather than a feminist.

This is for two main reasons.
I'm using gender-equalism rather than the more generic "egalitarianism".

The first reason is the name itself: F-e-m-i-n-i-s-t. I don't see any equality in that! It seems to be all about women. But gender equality is not just about women, it is about the whole community benefiting from raising the profile of women and advocating their rights. Gender inequality is harming humanity, not just women. It affects nations, economies, and life as a whole.

The second reason is the lack of consensus over the definition of feminism. People define it (and use it) in many different ways and contexts.

While many women groups (and I'm a proud member of one) have gained a lot for the cause of gender equality throughout history, the term may also be used in other contexts conflicting with what gender equality is about.

1- It is used by oppressive groups to propose limitation and censorship on women's clothes and mobility, so as to "protect" her.

2- It may be used by some "male" feminists to lure "grateful" women into abusive relationships.

3- It may be used by some female trolls to incur unfair gains or abuse men just because they are protected by feminism.

When comparing a man that makes his money by hard work, creativity, and progress (while not being abusive to women) and a woman that makes her wealth by silicon-stuffed curves. I would take the side of the man, not the woman, in this particular case although pleasing men is normally the reason behind such cosmetic trends. I'd say that women need to rise up to the responsibility of gender equality.

4- There is a competency gap that feminism seems reluctant to acknowledge. Women have been conditioned for long not to compete in the job market. Witch hunt, lobotomy, theocracies, colonialism (including Arab colonialism in the Middle East) have pulled women down across generations. Women must empower themselves and each other more in science and technology as much as they demand "protection"; so that equal opportunities - when reached, would work out for them and the world. Ask yourself, if you call yourself a (female) feminist, and you're not living in a community where women are normally cut, denied basic education, or financial independence; have you ever learned to operate a power tool, write a programming code, or build a shed; Have you ever repaired an electric switch or replaced a damaged fuse, or do you always ask a man when it operating any machine other than a car, a dishwasher, and a hoover? If you haven't, now is the time for learning and gaining skills, go for it!

5- Many time feminism slips into man-hate speech and will never blame women for contributing to the current inequality, while the truth is that a great deal of such inequality - and sometimes violence, is nurtured by women themselves. Take Female Gentile Mutilation as an example. Inequality is an ecosystem.

Girls queuing helplessly to be cut - picture from It’s Time to End FGM - GirlsGlobe (link to GirlsGlobe website/

6- The existence of such a biased expression (which was OK at a certain stage of history) defining those who work for gender equality seems like asking for "women care" rather than overall communal synergy based on gender equality. Again, this is all implied by the name, the lack of precise definition, then by the practices of some irresponsible, ignorant or misinformed individuals/groups.

I have to admit that I myself became a man-hater at a certain stage of my life, because of all the violence and brutality practiced by and for men against women in the Middle East, but when I looked closer, I was stunned at realising the massive role of many women in sustaining aggressive masculine cultures. Women think of themselves as trophies or candy bars to be covered and protected, women who would "snatch" men from each other, women who are happy to commodify their bodies and women who get violent against each other to please men. I finally came to the conclusion that gender-equality may need self-liberation and empowerment rather than self patronizing.

Shocking: What makes women settle for such fake pride; being the highest shareholder!

Just look at the amount of money and fame a distinguished female scientist makes, compared to the wealth and fame made by silicon-stuffed* female entertainers, to know that women should work harder on liberating themselves while they ask for justice. Justice is a double-edged sword!

Again, it is not what feminism stands for that is the problem, it is what it seems to be standing for due to the biased name and the lack of consensus over the definition. It is time the term feminism gets firmly and terminally replaced by gender-equality (perhaps gender-equalism) and still be advocating women's right for equality when and where necessary; for the whole community to prosper!

FGM & Circumcision: Two Different Battles

A perspective:

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

OmAhmed (a nickname meaning [mother of Ahmed]) was our neighbor 20 years ago. She visited once, and one of my little sisters burst into tears. OmAhmed looked at her and wondered: ِِAll this fuss because she pumped into a table, what will she do then when she gets cut?

- Cut? What does this mean? Why would a girl be cut?

Om Ahmed explained to me that a "good girl" must have her sexual organ (the clitoris)  cut that she gets to be like "lukewarm water" in bed. Otherwise, "she'll get on top of her man". She conveyed the horrific secret in almost a whisper.

She then told me about her unforgettable memories of it. How it "burnt like fire" for days and how she and her friends used to immerse themselves in the Nile water to relief the unbearable pain for a while. That was horrific to hear!

Later on, I learned how a woman's gentile has such a complex structure to prevent out-of-pain death while giving birth to a baby, and why she need a sort of attached "sensation organ" to complement her reproductive system (Al Saadwi, N. 1969; 1975)

Paradoxically, and because some cultures require a seemingly-analogous male cut called circumcision, this horrific process is often called female-circumcision as well.

However, if men would like to ban male-circumcision, they need to fight a separate battle - and get all the support they want. Male-circumcision and Female Gentile Mutilation are actually two opposing practices, in spite of the apparent analogy! That is to say, they're not different levels of the same thing.

Apart from the well-known life-long medical complications associated with FGM [1], it is essential to note that

- Male circumcision does not affect sexual function, pleasure or satisfaction.  While;

FGM is practiced specifically to prevent sexual pleasure and satisfaction. FGM is an amputation resulting in sexual dysfunction.

Male circumcision is practiced in victory (speaking of the culture: I'm personally not for it): The emotional support a male gets for undergoing such (unnecessary in my opinion) process may outweigh the associated frustration. In Egypt, neighbours party to celebrate male-circumcision in rituals similar to those of celebrating a baby-birth.

FGM, on the other hand, is designed to cause a lifelong trauma, humiliation and an ultimate loss of self-esteem (silence). It is therefore practiced in secret gatherings; in shame! This facilitates subjugating women, keeping them under masculine provision and facilitates (justifiable) exploitation in return of protection. It simply turns a woman into a "grateful" tool of production and reproduction. A mutilated female can easily get to think of herself as a commodity, and to the highest privilege, a trophy!

This criminal practice shapes and reshapes communities, and its impact goes beyond all localities. It is a form of social engineering with two fundamental problems:

1- The gain the oppressor incurs is too immense to be given up - although the total effect is destructive. Evidence suggests that oppression of women and gender inequality are associated with poverty and loss of biodiversity.

2- The oppressed is not usually aware of the transformation her personality undergoes and thus cooperate with the oppressor to perpetuate the violent process.
